The desire to plant a church in Barnwell, SC was planted in the heart of Pastor Robert L. Altman at age 19 as a freshman at Victory Baptist Bible College. Five years later Bethany Baptist Church was planted. A vision meeting was held in the home of Dan and Lisa Birt in December 2007; less than 15 adults were present. Each adult or couple present pledged a weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly gift to fund the ministry of Bethany Baptist Church. A building was found and agreed upon for purchase by the small group of visionaries.
A trucking office on Hwy 70 was purchased and remodeled to make a church building with a sanctuary, three classrooms, a care room, and an office. Meetings began on January 6, 2008 and Bethany started worship services on March 23, 2008, Easter Sunday. This was the official opening date after remodels were complete. The building underwent several renovations from the years 2008-2014 until it caught fire on June 28, 2014.
Bethany Baptist was welcomed to the campus of First Baptist Church Barnwell on June 29, 2014. The church gathered at the “Merge” facility through October 2015 until renovations to their new building were completed.  Today, Bethany Baptist Church is active in its community pursuing the lost and building up believers. Bethany welcomes you to be a disciple of Jesus that loves God, loves others, and serves both.
